  • Halftime report Greece vs. Spain

Porto, Portugal (Sports Network) - Spain heads into the locker room with a 1-0 lead over Greece after Fernando Morientes scored in the 28th minute at Bessa XXI Stadium.

The Spaniards dominated the opening 45 minutes of action between the two Group A leaders, who both won their opening matches on Saturday. Greece, which shockingly upset host country Portugal in its first EURO 2004 match, was back on its heels right from the opening whistle against Spain.

Still, the strong Greek defense was able to hold Spain's attack at bay over the first 20-plus minutes. A deadly turnover by Greek defender Mihalis Kapsis in his own area, though, proved to be too much for the underdogs to overcome.

Spanish striker Raul picked up the errant pass at the side of the area and dropped a beautiful backheel pass to Morientes, who cut the ball back and ripped a shot past Greek goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis for a 1-0 lead.

Spain is looking to win its second match in as many tries in the competition and take a commanding lead in Group A if they can hold onto the lead. The 1-0 win over Russia on Saturday allowed the Spaniards to reach their current position. Greece, meanwhile, is on the verge of having its seven-match win streak come to an end.

The physical first half featured five yellow cards and numerous other foul calls. Greek midfielder Georgios Karagounis and Spanish defender Carlos Marchena were each cautioned in the opening 45 minutes for their second such infraction of the competition. Each will miss their countries next match.

Spain will play Portugal and Greece will match up with Russia on Sunday in their final match of the opening round group play.
