Bears promote Marinelli to defensive coordinator
Lake Forest, IL (Sports Network) - The Chicago Bears have promoted Rod Marinelli to the defensive coordinator position, the team announced Friday.
Marinelli will retain his title of assistant head coach, which he held this past season while serving as the team's defensive line coach.
He was hired by Chicago after three years as the Detroit Lions' head coach, a stint that included an 0-16 campaign in 2008 -- the first time an NFL team went the entire season without a win since the league went to a 16-game format.
Marinelli was fired after that season, and the Lions went 10-38 in his three seasons there.
Overall, Marinelli has accumulated 14 seasons of NFL coaching experience and, prior to joining the Lions, had a successful 10-year stint as defensive line coach for the Buccaneers.
During the last four seasons in Tampa Bay, he took on the added duties of assistant head coach.
Additionally Friday, the Bears rounded out the rest of their coaching staff by naming Eric Washington defensive line coach, Shane Day quarterbacks coach, Andrew Hayes-Stoker offensive quality control coach and Mikal Smith defensive quality control coach.
