Griffin won't return for Murray State
Murray, KY (Sports Network) - Murray State head football coach Matt Griffin will not return next season.
Griffin is completing his fourth season with the Racers, who are 3-7 heading into the season-finale on Saturday against Tennessee Tech. Murray State is just 11-33 during Griffin's tenure.
"I appreciate what Coach Griffin has done to advance the rebuilding process at Murray State," said Murray State athletic director Allen Ward. "We have a good nucleus of players, and he made some significant progress in a number of areas important to the long-term stability of the program.
But as I evaluate the season and what's in our overall best interests, I have determined a change would be to our advantage at this point in time." The Racers were just 1-10 in Griffin's first season, then won two games in his second before last year's squad finished 5-7.
"My family and I have and will always appreciate the generous support of the Murray State University administration, students, loyal alumnae, fans and student-athletes," said Griffin. "The Racer football program has in place a strong foundation for future success. Thank you for the opportunity to serve Murray State University." Griffin was the head coach at Tennessee-Martin for three seasons before taking over at Murray State. He has a career record of 21-57 in six seasons as a head coach.
