• Kay won't return for Columbus

  
  

  Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - The Columbus Destroyers announced Monday that head coach Doug Kay will not return for the 2009 season.

  The Destroyers followed up a trip to the Arena Bowl in 2007 with a dismal 3-13 season in 2008, finishing last in the Eastern Division of the National Conference.

  "Coach Kay helped our team become a better organization," said Destroyers partner, general manager and president Jim Renacci.

  "He brought a lot of character to the team and this franchise and took us to the Arena Bowl in 2007.

  For that, the Destroyers family will always be grateful. He will always be respected as a coach and considered a friend." Kay spent three years as Columbus' coach, compiling a record of 21-31. The Destroyers were just 7-9 in 2007, then won three road playoff games before a 55-33 loss to San Jose in Arena Bowl XXI.
