  • Royals come to terms with righty Brad Thompson

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with right-hander Brad Thompson.

Because Thompson was a minor league free agent he was able to sign a 2010 contract prior to Friday, when major league free agents can begin signing with new clubs.

Thompson, who turns 28 on January 31, pitched in 32 games with eight starts for the St.

Louis Cardinals last season and logged a 2-6 record with a 4.84 earned run average. He is 21-17 with a 4.24 ERA in 185 games, including 32 starts, over five seasons in the majors -- all with St. Louis.

The deal does not guarantee Thompson a spot on the Royals' 40-man roster.
