  • Mets' Francoeur undergoes thumb surgery

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - New York Mets outfielder Jeff Francoeur underwent successful surgery to repair a tear of the collateral ligament in his left thumb Monday in Atlanta.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Gary Lourie at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

The 25-year-old Francoeur tore the ligament in the thumb in a game against the Phillies on August 23 at Citi Field.

Francoeur made a diving catch in right field for a ball hit by Philadelphia's Eric Bruntlett.

Francoeur joined the Mets in a July 10 trade from Atlanta, as the Braves acquired outfielder Ryan Church in return.

In 75 games for New York, Francoeur batted .311 with 41 RBI, 40 runs scored, and 10 home runs. He hit .250 with 35 runs batted in, 32 runs scored, and five home runs in 82 games with the Braves in 2009.

Francoeur is expected to be ready for Spring Training in February.
