• LSU beats Texas in 11 innings in opener of CWS championship

  
  

  Omaha, NE (Sports Network) - DJ LeMahieu tied the game with a two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning, and Mikie Mahtook delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the 11th, lifting LSU to a dramatic 7-6 win over Texas in the opener of the best-of-three championship round in the College World Series.

  LeMahieu also homered for the Tigers, one of seven round-trippers in the game, and LSU is now one win away from capturing its sixth national championship. The Tigers have a 14-game winning streak going into Tuesday, when LSU can wrap up the series.

  The Tigers won despite five solo homers from the top-seeded Longhorns, who are after their seventh title. Ryan Schimpf also homered for the Tigers, who are making their first appearance in the CWS championship round since 2000, when they lost to Texas, 13-5. Jared Mitchell stroked a two-run triple for LSU, the NCAA Tournament's No. 3 seed.

  Texas had won its previous eight games at the CWS dating back to their 2005 national championship, which was the longest active CWS win streak.

  Russell Moldenhauer belted a pair of homers for Texas, while Travis Tucker, Kevin Keyes and Connor Rowe also went deep.

  Sophomore right-hander Chance Ruffin gave up five hits and three runs, walking one batter and striking out 10 in a 5 2/3-inning start for the Longhorns.

  LSU senior right-hander Louis Coleman yielded nine hits, including five homers, and six runs while striking out six over six-plus innings during the outing in the searing heat at Rosenblatt Stadium.

  Matty Ott threw the final three innings to get the win for LSU, while Brandon Workman suffered the loss.

  Ahead, 6-4, in the top of the ninth inning, the Longhorns failed to close it out.

  Sean Ochinko singled with one out and was lifted for a pinch-runner. Taylor Jungmann relieved Austin Wood but threw six straight balls, walking Derek Helenihi and then falling behind 2-0 on pinch-hitter Tyler Hanover. The Longhorns immediately went to Austin Dicharry in the middle of the at-bat, and he fanned Hanover, who swung on a low-and-outside 3-2 pitch.

  LeMahieu, though, immediately doubled to the corner in left field, tying the game.

  Schimpf was intentionally walked, but Blake Dean flied out to center to keep the game tied.

  The Longhorns had a runner at second with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but consecutive fly balls sent the game into extra innings.

  LSU had the bases loaded with one out in the 10th, but Helenihi and Hanover both struck out.

  In the 11th, LeMahieu led off with a walk, stole second with two outs and went to third when catcher Cameron Rupp's throw went into center field. Micah Gibbs walked before Mahtook singled cleanly up the middle to plate the runner.

  Workman fanned Brandon Loy and Tim Maitland and retired Rowe on a grounder to end the game.

  Schimpf homered to right field with one out in the top of the first, but the Longhorns used the long ball to go in front in the fourth. Tucker led off with a homer to left. With one out, Moldenhauer blasted one over the wall in center, and with two down Keyes blasted an offering from Coleman past the fence in left-center.

  LSU managed to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth.

  Dean and Gibbs hit back-to-back singles with one out, and, with two outs, Mitchell greeted Wood with a triple to the gap in right-center.

  With one out in the sixth, Moldenhauer belted a homer to left field, giving Texas a 4-3 lead.

  Keyes singled with two outs, and Loy doubled, before Keyes scored on a wild pitch.

  LSU head coach Paul Mainieri argued that Coleman's pitch hit Preston Clark's jersey, but replays seemed to show the ball was clearly behind him before bouncing off the end of Gibbs' glove.

  LeMahieu homered to center with two outs in the seventh for a 5-4 difference, but Rowe restored the two-run cushion for the Longhorns with a shot to left leading off the bottom of the inning against Louis Coleman.
